SO it’s been a while.
My life has been pretty busy, and it didn’t help a couple of weeks back when I had a carpal tunnel scare. (I’m okay now.) To get back into the drawing swing of things, it was time for more wrestlers.
Presenting: Gwendolyn and Ursulaa Fraqure. (Pronounced like “fracture” but with a french accent, since pun names in wrestling are cool.) They’re sisters who come from a wrestling family, but have differing ideas as to what the “proper” way to be a wrestler is.
This was a twofold exercise: The first was I wanted to learn Manga Studio. And holy crap it is fantastic. I basically don’t have any reason to use photoshop for drawing anymore because everything is intuitive and just WORKS in Manga Studio. Plus, drawing with vectors is remarkably similar to using them in Toonboom.
Second, I wanted to design characters that differed visually, but you could tell they were related. (see: the freckles, nose shape, and the general inverted triangle body shapes on them)
It’s far from perfect. I need to get a handle on keeping my line weights consistent, and there are some wonky anatomy problems. But, I just wanted to push through and finish these. I still kinda like them! The black and white linework was me experimenting with defining their body types.
Gwendolyn (on the left, the older sister) was definitely influenced by early 90’s AJPW, specifically Bull Nakano and Aja Kong. Ursulaa (on the right, the younger one) I wanted to show as a kind of bratty kid.
Eventually I’ll write backstories and actual stories for them. For now, I’m happy I’ve been able to get somewhat of a hold on the software.
